Because!
It’s incredibly interesting, relevant, dynamic, controversial, intellectually stimulating… and EVERYONE should study Economics. It is categorically NOT like this…
Economists work in banks, governments, businesses, financial services advising on monetary and fiscal policy as you’d expect, but as The Financial Times points out economists also “design policies to allocate donor organs… to improve child nutrition, they examine the balance of power between employers and employees and the rise of “deaths of despair” among the white working-class”… Whilst economists do of course work in banks, accountancy firms, government departments etc. others work in health economics, development economics, agricultural economics, education economics…. the list goes on! Take a look at the Careers in Economics page for more information.
The new #discovereconomics campaign has put together a brilliant summary of Economics… take a look here
You could end up looking at gender pay differences, the competition between GP practices, the impact of early schooling on e.g. students from disadvantaged backgrounds, how to achieve optimal outcomes for young people…. it’s not just about money and the stock market!
Economists aren’t dusty old academics – there’s actually an Economics & Comedy festival every year in Ireland… Kilkenomics which you should definitely go to if you’re in Europe in early November.
The American Economics Association has a useful introduction if you’re thinking about studying Economics…
